Portage CRC seeks volunteers for Neighbourhood Safety Audit

The Portage Community Revitilization Corporation will be holding an information session Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Portage Regional Library for the upcoming Neighbourhood Safety Audit.
The pilot project is looking for volunteers to aid with the first selected area for the Audit, which will include an area of the downtown core covering Saskatchewan Avenue north to Fisher Avenue, Tupper Street to 3rd Street.
According to Community Facilitator Mary Lynn Moffat, the safety audit is to help Portage residents and business people to discern how safe they feel in the area.
"We'll be looking at reasons why a space would feel unsafe," she explained. "We need to identify what affects a feeling of safety nad make recommendations based on the findings. Is the area well-lit? Are there overgrown bushes? Is there graffiti? And it also deals with the emotional part of safety. How safe do you feel?"
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and reside in Portage la Prairie, but not necessarily in the area in question. Business owners in the area, people who access services or stores in the area, such as a bank or the library, are examples of some people who would be beneficial to the program."
Volunteers will take place in a two-day training program prior to the audit, and the CRC is seeking approximately 15 to 20 volunteers.
