The University of Manitoba's Delta Marsh Field Station will be shut down for the winter due to the fact that it is losing money, a school official said.
"It's been financially struggling for the last couple of years," Leah Janzen, communications manager for the university said.
The facilities at the station, including six independent laboratories a lodge, three cottages and two dormitories, are badly in need of upgrades and under its current business model is not financially sustainable, Janzen noted.
University administration opted to shut the facility, which was established in 1966, over the winter and hire a consultant to figure out how the station could be run more efficiently.
Once a new business model is in place, it will be re-opened in spring of 2010, Janzen said.
Exactly how much money the field station was losing for the university will be determined over the winter, too.
The announcement came as a shock to the half-dozen field station staff, including director Gordon Goldsborough, who said information about what will happen to the station is limited.
"I can confirm that we are closing," Goldsborough said. "I can confirm the staff is being laid off."
The last day of operations will be Nov. 30, he added.
