Staff photo by Rob Swystun -- Lobbying the provincial government to establish a medical school at Brandon University was among resolutions passed at the Association of Manitoba Municipalities' 11th Annual Convention in Brandon.

Establishing a medical school at the University of Brandon was at the top of municipal representatives' lists as the most important resolution passed at the Association of Manitoba Municipalities 11th Annual Convention.

"That was one that would be important for all of Manitoba," Coun. Orville Wagner with the City of Portage la Prairie, said.

Wagner is also on the resolutions committee for the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM).

Wagner, on the phone from Brandon where the convention was held, also mentioned there was a lot of discussion about that particular resolution, which instructs the AMM to lobby the provincial government for the creation and operation of a rural satellite medical school at Brandon University.

Deputy Mayor Dave Quinn said the focus of that particular resolution, which was sponsored by the Rural Municipalities of Roblin, Pipestone and Shoal Lake, was to try and help rural communities recruit medical practitioners.

"This was brought up by Roblin and Pipestone and Shoal Lake with the indication that it physicians are trained in rural areas they tend to stay in rural areas," Quinn noted.
