McCain Foods Canada to lay off 40

McCain Foods Canada Ltd. has confirmed 40 people are losing their jobs next month due to softening sales at the Portage la Prairie plant.

McCain told their workers the layoffs were coming on May 4, said Calla Farn, spokesperson for McCain from their headquarters in New Brunswick.

"This is a result of several factors, including the continuing high Canadian dollar, the low cost of raw potatoes in Europe, and softness in U.S. consumption," said Farn. "People (are) eating out less often because of the recession."

Farn said the layoffs will be effective Aug. 16.

"We are eliminating one shift from one of our production lines," she said.

"Under our company policy, the layoffs are based on seniority and skill set. In most cases, the most junior employees are laid off first. Of the people being impacted in this particular case, one has more than two years of service with the company."

In the McCain parking lot, one employee said most of the laid-off workers are frustrated, but the layoffs were fair.

"Some people are ready to move on and they are using it (the layoff) as an opportunity to go back to school," he said, asking not to be named.
