Leona Aglukkaq, federal minister of health, was at Long Plain First Nation Wednesday to announce $110 million to help fight diabetes among aboriginal people.
"(Let's) celebrate the progress this community has made in tackling diabetes," said Aglukkaq at the Long Plain Health Services Adult Day Program Room.
Long Plain's efforts to respond to the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes among its people were on display, not only the community-based programming it has developed, but also the healthy example individuals are living.
Hanging in the program room where the funding announcement was made is a colourful quilt filled with people's names. It is a memory quilt for people who have died due to complications from diabetes.
"It's really interesting when people come into the room and they see that. They take a look and they look for their family member and it just brings back, usually good memories but sometimes it's hurtful because that person might have lived a little bit longer if they hadn't had diabetes," said Carol Beaulieu, health director at Long Plain.
