Portage la Prairie tennis wunderkind Sean Sophasath was able to raise the money needed to travel and compete in boys' singles at the Rogers U12 Junior National Championships, but will miss the event due to personal reasons.
The nine-year-old Portage Tennis Club member qualified for the event running July 30-Aug. 5 in Mont Tremblant, Que., and received several donations from the community to help him make the trip there before the decision not to travel was made.
"Thank you to everybody in the community who donated. It was really extraordinary to see that many people step up," said PTC president Darren Jones, who spearheaded the charge to get Sophasath off to nationals. "It would have been a great experience and it was too bad Sean had to miss it."
Jones said that many donations have been returned, and the rest will be refunded over the next two weeks.
