Pauline Kupiak, program co-ordinator at the Portage and District Arts Centre spent last weekend in Toronto taking in several gala events at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.
She met up with representatives from Film Circuit, our PDAC Reel Event partners, who provided her with the opportunity to view seven films in two days and take in several festival parties.
“Film Circuit did a great job of selecting a variety of Canadian and International productions for Film Circuit groups to screen,” Pauline commented. “It was an awesome opportunity, and I would be happy to go again!”
TIFF is the second largest film festival in the world, celebrating the film industry and providing guests with the opportunity to screen soon-to-be-released films. It is often thought to be a fairly accurate precursor to the Oscars.

Pauline’s highlight of the weekend was meeting Canadian director Dilip Mehta of the film “Cooking with Stella,” a spicy social satire, which is slated to be released in the spring.
The Reel Event starts on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. with the film “Easy Virtue,” a comedy starring Colin Firth and Jessica Biel. Six-movie season passes for the PDAC Reel Event are on sale now at the Arts Centre for $40 and entitles you to receive a $1 discount off other regular-admission movies shown at the Cinema Centre.
We are thrilled to have Bjorn Christianson Q.C. Law Corporation sponsor the PDAC Reel Event again this season.

Heather Bishop — concert and art exhibit
The arts centre is pleased to present Juno nominee Heather Bishop in concert at the William Glesby Centre on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and include a reception with Heather in the gallery following the concert. Tickets are available at the arts centre.
Bishop’s performance opens her oil portraiture exhibition, “My Face is a Map of My Time Here,” which will be on display in the gallery from Oct. 20-Nov. 28. Century 21 Andrich Realty locally sponsors this exhibition and performance.

Urgent reminder!
The 2010 PowerSmart Manitoba Winter Games are fast approaching and so is the deadline, extended to Oct. 31, for artwork submissions from local artists to a juried competition for the host community’s sponsor recognition gift. We are looking for an original work, open to all media, approximately 18x24 inches or larger, a winter scene with a Portage la Prairie flavour, embodying the theme of the Games: “Feel the Energy.” Contact the arts centre for more information at 239-6029!

Dance starts this week!
Dance classes are filling up, so hustle down to the arts centre to get registered as soon as possible. We offer a variety of dance disciplines for boys, girls and adults, including Creative Movement, Hop N’ Tap, Hop N’ Bop, ballet, hip hop and jazz.

Sticky Fingers Art
We now have a second class of Sticky Fingers Art for ages 2-4 (and parents) with instructor Kelly Port on Thursday mornings starting on Nov. 5 for four weeks. During these classes, your child will explore the world of colour through the use of markers, crayons, chalk, paint and paper.

Upcoming teen and adult classes
We have watercolour painting classes with instructor Linda Hanneson on Wednesday evenings starting on Sept. 30 and an afternoon watercolour class with instructor Bernice Einarson on Thursdays starting Oct. 1.
Other fall classes available include pottery, quilting and digital photography.

October weekend workshops
We have several amazing workshops happening at the arts centre next month. The art intensive drawing workshop with instructor Marcel Debreuil still has a few spots left.
The watercolour workshop with instructor Sylvia Russell on Oct. 3 needs more participants. In this fun-filled workshop, you will learn several strokes with the flat brush to produce bull rushes, *****willows, daisies and more. This is a great workshop for people interested in making their own cards.
On Oct. 24, we have an acrylic workshop with instructor David Cooper. This workshop is for anyone who has dabbled in acrylics and is looking for a larger understanding of the medium. Other weekend workshops happening throughout the fall are: oil painting (Bob Ross-style), framing and matting, documenting your art and stained glass. Drop by the arts centre to pick up a brochure for more details on each class and workshop. Become a member and receive discounts!

Children’s workshop
Register for the Musical Art Workshop for Youth, ages 9-13, on Nov. 21 from 1-4 p.m. with instructor Julianne Dick. Your child will explore the relationship between music and art through various activities.
Portage and District Arts Centre is located at 11-Second St. N.E. in Portage la Prairie. Office and gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Call 204-239-6029, or check out our website at www.portageartscentre.ca
