The Winnipeg symphony is coming to town! The Portage and District Arts Centre is bringing the entire Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to Portage on Dec. 16. It is sure to be a magical evening for the entire family.
In the first half of the concert, the symphony will perform wonderful holiday music followed by the masterful score to “The Snowman”, which is a heartwarming film based on a beautiful children’s book. The evening will finish with the ever popular singalong. As an added treat, dainties and refreshments will be served during the intermission. Concert tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for PDAC members and $18 for students, and are on sale now at the arts centre. We are pleased to have Christianson Christianson Jones, Law Corp. locally sponsoring this year’s Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performance.

Is anybody there?
On Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cinema Centre Theatre, the Reel Event presents, “Is Anybody There?” starring Michael Caine, Bill Milner, Anne-Marie Duff and David Morrissey.
The movie is a tender portrait of friendship between an inquisitive 10-year-old boy (Milner) and a retired magician (Caine). The unlikely couple find themselves embroiled in a series of comic misadventures that touch on the deeper questions and mysteries of life.
Season passes are available for the next five movies at the arts centre for $35. Single movie tickets may be purchased for $9 at the theatre door. We are thrilled to have Bjorn Christianson Q.C. Law Corp. sponsor the PDAC Reel Event again this season.

Original and affordable gifts
Unique gifts of every description are what you will find at the arts centre’s gift shop. We have stunning stained glass window hangings, beautiful hand-crafted wood ornaments and a wide assortment of pottery.
The gift shop also has a wonderful variety of prints and photographs, wood-turned and acrylic pens, a variety of books by local authors, wheat-weaving frames, quilts, colourful handmade rugs, leather moccasins and so much more. Unique and one of a kind, it’s wonderful to own or give a gift created by a local artisan.
The shop also stocks high quality art supplies, and if we don’t have what you need, we can order it in for you. Become a member and receive a 10 per cent discount on all art supply items.
Gift certificates are available, which may be used in the gift shop or for the various classes and workshops that are offered at the centre. It’s worth the trip to the arts centre to browse the gift shop and to enjoy the latest exhibition in the gallery. You may even find that special piece of artwork that you have been looking for!

In the gallery
Heather Bishop’s oil portraiture exhibition, entitled “My Face is a Map of My Time Here,” is in the gallery until Nov. 28. Bishop’s artwork captures the old and young in oil on canvas. The detail in her paintings reveals the life experiences of her subjects, and their facial expressions captured on canvas are endearing. We are pleased to have the Manitoba Arts Council and Century 21 Andrich Realty locally sponsoring this exhibition.

Quilt a table runner
We have a few spots available in the Christmas table topper evening quilting classes on Nov. 17, 24 and Dec. 1 from 7-9:30 p.m. Instructor Pat Crandell will be teaching the popular log cabin block.

Register for a November workshop
We have several interesting workshops happening at the arts centre in November.
Donalda Johnson is teaching framing and matting on Nov. 14, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This workshop will cover the types and requirements of various frames, mats, and backing materials and mat cutting.

A new workshop for this fall is Documenting Your Art with instructor Leif Norman, on Nov. 21 from 1-4 p.m. You will learn how to photograph your artwork with the use of different lighting and background.
On Nov. 28 from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Julie Lamoureux will teach Bob Ross-style oil painting. Julie has chosen “Summer” as the painting that you will complete in this workshop.
