Well here we are into November and no snow yet. I am keeping my fingers crossed, although the Portage la Prairie Friendship Centre tells me I don’t have to worry as they have some snowshoes available. Somehow, that is not all that reassuring.
The week of Nov. 15-21 is National Addictions Awareness Week. The Portage Friendship Centre is hosting a community supper on Nov. 16, from 5:30-8 p.m. Nov. 17 is crazy hat day, so wear a crazy hat to show support for Addictions Awareness Week. On Nov. 18, there is a Sharing Circle from 7-9 p.m. This Sharing Circle will be ongoing for the rest of the year. I understand that there will be an addictions speaker also coming in sometime this week for information on that contact the Portage Friendship Centre at 239-6333. We will be finishing off the week with a community dance on Nov. 20 from 6-9 p.m.
We have ongoing nutrition counselling with Barb from ADI (Aboriginal Diabetic Initiative), and our exercise facility is still open to anyone. We have a universal gym, treadmill, elliptical trainer, recumbent and exercise bikes. TV and water are available. If you need a calendar, just call and pick one up or we can send one to you. For those of you who are into making healthy food on a budget, come to our canning session on Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. We are looking at doing some healthy canning, there is a snack provided.
For those of you interested in joining the Quilting Queens with your own projects, come out on Nov. 21 for a quilting workday starting at 9 a.m. This day will have a potluck lunch served at noon, so come out and share. If you are a beginner quilter, we can help you get started. If you are an expert, maybe you can help us. This year, our theme is unfinished objects (UFO) so if you have a project to finish bring it along. If you are just starting one bring that too. Come out and join us. We welcome one and all.
Our Halloween Haunted House was a wonderful success, and I still wonder how they dream up this stuff. We are now looking forward to Christmas. To help cover costs of children’s programs, there is an ongoing raffle. Tickets are available from the Friendship Centre, Eagle’s Fire Youth Centre and all staff and board members. So help us by purchasing tickets.
Also coming up for Christmas is a Christmas Craft sale at Eagle Fire Youth Centre. This sale is scheduled for Dec. 12, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. If you want to book a table call Shirley Bernard for Information.
Lauri Klyne is an elder with the Portage Friendship Centre.
